Director of Development
Chuck Sleeper joined Michigan State in October of 2002 as Assistant Athletics Director & Director of Major Gifts. In September of 2005, Chuck was promoted to Sr. Associate Athletics Director and Director of Development. The Athletic Development Office has prospered under his leadership. Sleeper led the athletic development team to a record $19.2 million raised for fiscal year 2006 and $28.5 million in fiscal 2007. Chuck oversees a full-time staff of nine, including five development officers, a development assistant and 3 administrative support personnel.
The Athletic Development Office has surpassed its $75.7 capital campaign goal by raising over $127,000,000 (168% of goal). These results have included the largest gift in the history of MSU Athletics ($5 million from Robert & Julie Skandalaris) and the largest gift to an Olympic sports program ($750,000 from Doug & Valerie DeMartin for MSU Soccer) in the history of MSU.
Prior to MSU, Chuck served as Assistant Athletics Director for Development at Arizona State University where he spearheaded capital and endowment fund raising. From 1992-2000, he served as Associate Athletic Director for Advancement at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Sleeper was a key participant in Cal Poly's move from NCAA Division II to Division I status. At Cal Poly, Chuck led the Mustang's first-ever capital campaign that enabled the program to complete a $12 million sports complex, including new softball and baseball stadiums; a renovation of the basketball facility; and, a new weight room. Sleeper also held positions in athletics administration at Grand Valley State University and the University of Michigan.
Sleeper attended Grand Valley State where he was a four-year starter on the Lakers' pitching staff under head coach Phil Regan. Chuck received his degree in political science from GVSU in 1983. In 1986 Sleeper earned a master's degree in sports administration from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. Chuck and his wife, Julia, were both raised in the Lansing area. They have two children - Luke and Olivia.
